General Information on our Ski Club
As air travel became more and more common in the 1960's and 70's ski clubs sprang up all over the United States. Their initial reason for being was to join together to get group discounts on air fares and to simplify and reduce the costs of skiing in the western U.S. and at other great destinations.
The members of these ski clubs soon realized that cost savings were not the only benefit. Skiing with old and new friends each year was great fun and a great social experience. Think of it as an early version of "Facebook" ...with skiing!
In recent decades, the rise of snowboarding caused some raised eyebrows in the traditional skiing community (to say the least). These days you can hardly tell who is a snowboarder and who is an skier at the après ski events so typical of our clubs.
Clubs like the Columbia Ski and Adventure Club are often associated, as we are, with larger groups like the Crescent Ski Council. Ski councils are clubs of clubs. Crescent Ski Council currently is an association of more than a dozen ski clubs in the southeastern United States. Authorized clubs within the Crescent Ski Council include, Charlotte, NC; Kanawah (West Virginia); Huntsville, AL;, Ashville, NC; Palmetto, Greenville, NC; East Tennessee Mogul Mashers and many, many more.
